Refrigerator Not Cooling? How to Tell a $48 Start Relay From a $90 Control Board (DA92-00795A, WR60X26866, 5304499966)
In 1927 General Electric started selling a refrigerator that looked like a filing cabinet wearing a hatbox. The Monitor Top put its compressor and condenser in a sealed drum on top of the cabinet, where the heat could rise away from the food, and hermetically sealing that assembly meant it did not need the oiling and belt-tightening that killed earlier machines. It was the first refrigerator to sell in genuinely large numbers, and the punchline is that working examples are still running in museums and basements a century later — because the one part that never fails is the part with no user-serviceable anything inside it.

Your refrigerator has the same sealed compressor. What it also has, which the Monitor Top did not, is a fan motor, a defrost heater, a damper, an ice maker, a start relay and a computer — and when a modern fridge stops cooling, it is almost always one of those, not the compressor. That distinction is worth about a thousand dollars, so it is worth twenty minutes to work out which one before anybody says the word “replacement.”
Start with the symptom, not the part
- Warm fridge AND warm freezer, compressor silent, a click every few minutes. Classic overload/start relay. The relay is trying to start the compressor motor, failing, tripping the overload, cooling down and trying again. Cheapest real fix on the list.
- Warm fresh-food side, freezer still frozen. Cold air is made in the freezer and blown forward. If the evaporator fan is dead or the damper is stuck, the freezer stays cold and the fridge slowly warms. Open the freezer and listen: no fan whir with the door switch defeated means fan motor.
- Both compartments slowly warming, thick frost on the back wall of the freezer. Defrost system. The evaporator coil ices over until air can no longer pass through it.
- Panel dead, lights out, nothing responds, or the compartments behave randomly. Main control board.
- Everything cold, no ice. Ice maker module or water valve — not a cooling fault at all.
The $48 answer: the overload start relay
The relay is a small plug-on device clipped to the side of the compressor, behind the cardboard panel at the bottom rear of the cabinet. It gives the motor its starting kick and protects it from overheating. When it fails, the compressor cannot start — and a compressor that keeps trying to start against a bad relay is a compressor being slowly destroyed, which is the real reason to fix this one quickly. The $47 answer: the evaporator fan motor
A refrigerator makes cold in exactly one place. The evaporator fan is what moves that cold into the fresh-food compartment, and it is a small brushless motor living in a wet, freezing, constantly cycling environment, which is why it is one of the most-replaced parts in the machine. A giveaway is a fridge that is warm on the top shelf and fine at the bottom, or a fan that screeches for a week and then goes quiet. The board is the last thing to suspect and the first thing the internet blames. Real board symptoms are the ones no single component explains: a dead display, compartments that will not respond to setpoints, a compressor that never gets a run command even though the relay tests good, or a Family Hub screen that will not come up.
