Where to Put a Wi-Fi Extender (The 2-Minute Placement Guide)
The #1 mistake with Wi-Fi extenders: plugging them in where the signal is bad. An extender can only repeat what it receives.
The halfway rule
Place the extender roughly halfway between your router and the dead zone, in an outlet where your phone still shows 2–3 bars of the original network. It should sit in good signal and push into the bad area.
2.4GHz vs 5GHz
2.4GHz travels farther and through walls; 5GHz is faster at short range. A dual-band extender (anything AC750 and up) handles both. For streaming in a far bedroom, dual-band is worth the few extra dollars.
When to go mesh instead
If you're covering 3+ dead zones or a multi-floor house, a mesh kit beats stacking extenders. For one stubborn room — which is most people — a single well-placed extender is the cheap, right answer.
Setup tip
Use the WPS button method first (press on router, press on extender within 2 minutes). It pairs 90% of the time and skips the app entirely.
