The Word Is Older Than the Business

When an auctioneer says “lot 41,” the word is doing something very specific. A lot is not a quantity and not a category — it is a decision the seller has already made about what gets sold together. Draw a line around a pile of things, give it a number, sell the line rather than the contents. Everything from a single painting to eighty acres of townsite has been sold that way, and the mechanic has not changed in centuries.

What has changed is who is bidding. A century ago it was land speculators. Today it is a person with a spare bedroom, a shipping scale and an eBay account, and the thing being drawn around is a heap of consumer returns. That business runs on one number: what the pile costs divided by what the pieces sell for. And the second-biggest cost in it, after the goods themselves, is not shipping. It is time.

The Real Cost of a Mystery Pallet

Anyone who has bought a liquidation pallet knows the arithmetic that follows. You pay a few hundred dollars, a truck arrives, and then you spend a week discovering what you own. Every unit has to be identified, researched, photographed, described, priced and listed. On small accessories — a phone case, a charger, a screen protector — that work takes the same twenty minutes whether the item sells for $9 or $90, which is exactly why so many pallet buyers end up with a garage of stock that never gets listed at all.

What Is On the Shelf Right Now

Mobile and computing accessories. A 34-piece tablet, phone and computer accessories reseller bundle is $189.04 — iPad and MacBook cases, iPhone cases with stands, Bluetooth keyboards and keyboard cases, MOFT laptop and tablet stands, tempered glass, lanyards and card readers, from brands including ESR, MOFT, ZAGG, TORRAS, Soonjet and Antbox. The listing carries the full itemized table with a live link to each original listing. Total listed price across the 34 items was $725.60.

Same-model iPad cases, which is the underrated play. A wholesale lot of 15 iPad Pro 11-inch (M4/M5) cases is $180.49, and the important word is same: every one of the fifteen fits the same tablet, so this is one listing template and one fitment answer repeated fifteen times rather than fifteen separate research jobs. MOFT Dynamic Folios, OtterBox Defender and ESR, against a combined listed value of $430.30. Schools and businesses deploying a room full of identical iPads buy these lots for exactly the same reason.

Volume, priced by the unit. A 37-piece lot of WiFi extenders, range boosters and signal repeaters is $177.25 — that works out to roughly $4.79 a unit. Every single unit in that lot was inspected and photographed by us: the first photo shows the whole lot, and the photos after it show each unit close up, two per frame. Units are not individually power-tested, so it is priced and sold as a resale lot, not as retail stock. Packaging and accessory content vary unit to unit.

Printer supplies, where the retail spread is widest. A lot of 13 toner cartridges and drums is $135.99 — Brother TN830XL, TN223, TN730 and TN820, HP 305X, plus Xerox and Brother drum units, against a total manufacturer retail value of $869.91. Toner is a category where buyers search by an exact part number and buy immediately, which makes it about the fastest-listing inventory there is.

Networking. A lot of 11 networking units is $101.99 — a NETGEAR AX1600 WiFi 6 router, a Linksys MR6350, a NETGEAR EAX12 WiFi 6 mesh extender, an EX6110, a cable modem and several dual-band boosters, against $428.89 of retail value.

Cordless phones. A lot of 9 cordless phones is $93.99 — Panasonic KX-TGC202 and KX-TGC222S, VTech CS5229, CS6114, CS6529 and CS6719, and a KX-TSC11B corded single-line set, against $412.62 retail. Landline handsets are one of those quiet categories that sells steadily to an older demographic that never left it, with almost no competition from new-product launches.

PC accessories. A lot of 13 PC accessories is $105.99 — a Turtle Beach Recon 50 headset, a TECKNET RGB gaming keyboard, laptop chargers, keycap sets, a tablet floor tripod and Bluetooth headsets, against $584.81 retail.

How to Actually Price a Lot Before You Buy It

Three rules that hold across every one of these:

• Ignore the retail value. Use the sold price. Manufacturer retail is the ceiling nobody pays. Check what the model actually closes at, then subtract the marketplace fee and the postage.
• Price your own labour in. At twenty minutes a unit, a 37-piece lot is about twelve hours of work. If the lot cost $177 and the pieces net $12 each after fees and shipping, the lot returns roughly $444 — but you earned a good chunk of that with your hands, and you should know that going in rather than finding out in month two.
• Prefer lots where the units repeat. Fifteen cases for one iPad beat fifteen unrelated gadgets every time, because the second listing takes three minutes instead of twenty.

Mixed lots are sold as resale stock, as-is, at lot pricing rather than retail pricing. That is the trade: you take on the sorting risk and you get the goods below single-unit cost. It is the same bargain the buyers in that 1917 photograph were making, and it is still the only reason lots exist.
