In the late summer of 1854, cholera killed more than five hundred people in about ten days inside a few blocks of Soho, London. The accepted explanation at the time was miasma — bad air rising off the filth of the city. A physician named John Snow did not believe it, so he did something almost nobody thought to do: he walked the neighborhood, wrote down where each death had occurred, and drew them as marks on a street map.
The marks clustered. - Reverse osmosis pushes water through a semi-permeable membrane and strips out dissolved solids that carbon cannot touch — salts, nitrates, fluoride. It needs pressure, a storage tank and a drain line, and it sends some water down that drain. It is the right answer for very high total dissolved solids and the wrong answer if you just do not like the taste of chlorine.
