Trailer Sway, Tongue Weight and Truck Squat: A Towing Setup Guide (Equal-i-zer 10K Spring Arms, Helper Springs, RV Cover)
In the 1930s America decided, more or less all at once, that it wanted to drag its house behind the car. Wally Byam had started building trailers in his back yard in the late 1920s, and by 1936 the riveted aluminum Airstream Clipper was on the road looking like a fallen piece of a Douglas airliner. Thousands of small builders piled in. What almost none of them had was any real theory of what happens when you hang a two-ton box off the back bumper of a sedan and take it up to highway speed.
What happens is a pendulum. A trailer pivots on the hitch ball, and any disturbance — a gust, a passing semi, a lane correction — starts it oscillating. Whether that oscillation dies out or grows into the thing everyone calls sway comes down to where the trailer's weight sits relative to its axles, and how much of the load is carried on the tongue. Get it wrong and the tail genuinely does wag the dog, at 65 mph, with your family inside. Every piece of towing hardware sold today exists to solve some part of that one problem.

Tongue weight is the whole ballgame
The single number that decides whether a trailer tracks straight or hunts is tongue weight: how much of the loaded trailer's weight presses down on the ball. The long-standing rule of thumb for a conventional bumper-pull trailer is roughly 10 to 15 percent of the total loaded trailer weight. Too little, and the trailer's center of mass sits too far behind the axles — it becomes a pendulum looking for an excuse. Too much, and you crush the rear suspension of the tow vehicle, unweight the front tires, and lose steering and braking authority right when you need both.
This is why loading matters as much as hardware. Heavy items go over or slightly ahead of the trailer axles, low, and strapped down. A generator thrown in the back bay of the trailer, behind the axles, can flip a stable rig into a sketchy one without a single part failing.
What a weight distribution hitch actually does
People assume a weight distribution hitch reduces tongue weight. It does not — the weight is still there. What it does is redistribute it. Spring bars run from the hitch head back to brackets on the trailer frame and are tensioned, which levers load off the tow vehicle's rear axle and pushes it forward onto the front axle and back onto the trailer axles. The rig sits level instead of nose-up, the front tires get their grip back, and your headlights stop aiming into the trees.

One warning that gets ignored constantly: helper springs raise how much your truck can carry comfortably. They do not raise the manufacturer's gross vehicle weight rating, axle ratings, or tire load ratings. Those are set by brakes, frame, bearings and rubber, and no spring changes them.
The two things people forget until it is dark
