Sequential LED Tail Lights for Ford Trucks: 2004-2008 F-150, 1999-2007 Super Duty, and the 2021-2023 Blind Spot Lamp

The sweeping turn signal that every car company now advertises as a cutting-edge lighting feature is sixty years old. Ford put sequential turn signals on the 1965 Thunderbird: three bulbs per side across that enormous full-width tail panel, fired one after another, outward, by an electric motor turning a cam that closed a bank of contacts in sequence. It was a mechanical device with a motor in it, doing a job that today is a couple of lines of firmware. It looked spectacular. It also broke, because anything with a motor and a set of rubbing contacts under a car eventually does. The idea faded, resurfaced on the 2010 Mustang, and is now standard across half the industry.

Here is the good news for anyone with an older truck: the hard part is gone. A modern sequential LED assembly does the whole animation inside the housing, off the single factory turn-signal wire. No sequencer box, no relay, no splicing. You unplug the old lamp and plug in the new one.

2004-2008 F-150 Styleside — the full upgrade

One assembly combines running light, brake, turn signal and reverse, with LED beads in the backup section so there is no old incandescent bulb to carry over. The high-mount third brake / cargo lamp is included, which matters on a truck of this age because that lamp is usually the one that has been leaking and rusting for a decade under a bed cap. Part references are F85Z13405CA and F85Z13404CA, interchanging with FO2800117 and FO2801117. It is a heavy-duty ABS housing and it does require assembly during installation — plan the job, do not start it at dusk.

2021-2023 F-150 — the expensive one to break

Modern truck tail lights are not lamps any more, they are sensor housings, and that is why a parking-lot scrape now costs what it costs. Two more visibility fixes on the shelf

Being seen is only half the job; seeing is the other. Two notes before you buy

First, smoked lenses. They look excellent and they do cut output slightly; requirements for tail lamp visibility and colour vary by state, so check your local rules before you commit to a tinted lens on a daily driver. Second, verify every function before you put the trim back: brake, tail, reverse, both turn signals and the hazards, with someone standing behind the truck. Finding a dead reverse light after the bed liner is back in is a bad afternoon.
