How to Size a Dehumidifier for Your Space (Without Overpaying)
Dehumidifiers are one of the most returned appliances online, and it's almost always a sizing problem. Here's the short version of how to get it right.
The pint rating is a lab number
A "50-pint" unit removes 50 pints per day at 65°F and 60% humidity. Your garage in July is not a lab. Real-world removal is usually 60–70% of the sticker rating, so when in doubt, size up one tier.
Quick sizing chart
- Up to 800 sq ft (bedroom, small basement): 20–30 pint
- 800–1,500 sq ft (large basement, apartment): 35–50 pint
- 1,500 sq ft+ or standing water history: 50–70 pint with a pump
Features worth paying for
A built-in pump lets the unit push water up into a sink so you never empty a bucket. Auto-restart matters if you run it in a vacation home. Wi-Fi control is nice but rarely worth a big premium.
