Ford F-150 5.0L Coyote Intake Manifold FL3Z-9424-J: Why It's Plastic, What Fails, and What's Actually in the Box
For most of the twentieth century, an engine breathed through cast metal. Intake manifolds were iron, then aluminium, and they were heavy, expensive to machine, and they soaked up under-hood heat and handed it straight to the incoming air. Then in the 1990s the industry switched almost overnight to moulded composite — glass-filled nylon, essentially a very serious plastic. It is lighter, it insulates rather than conducts, it can be moulded with long curved runners no foundry could cast, and it is cheaper. Ford learned the hard way, too: the modular 4.6 and 5.4 V8s of that era shipped with a composite intake carrying an integrated coolant crossover that developed a reputation for cracking, and the fix — and the litigation — became one of the better-known chapters in plastic-intake history. The lesson the industry took was not "go back to aluminium." It was "stop running coolant through the plastic."

What FL3Z-9424-J is
FL3Z-9424-J is the Ford OE reference for the upper intake manifold on the second-generation 5.0L Coyote V8 as fitted to the 2015, 2016 and 2017 F-150. FL3Z-9424-F is the related number you will see quoted alongside it. Say the important thing plainly: FORRIE is an aftermarket manufacturer. This is not a Motorcraft or Ford-boxed part, and it is priced accordingly — a dealer manifold for this application is a substantially larger number. It is listed for the King Ranch, Lariat, Platinum, SSV, XL and XLT trims with the 5.0L V8.
Why an intake manifold has sensors bolted to it
Open the box and you find a manifold that already has electronics on it: two flap position sensors, a solenoid valve and an air pressure sensor, pre-installed. That is not decoration. Modern port-injected V8s use charge-motion control — flaps inside the intake runners that partially close at low engine speed to accelerate and swirl the incoming air, which improves mixing, idle quality and cold-start emissions, then open fully as the revs climb so they do not choke the top end. The flaps need an actuator to move them and position sensors so the engine computer knows where they actually are, rather than where it asked them to be.
That is also the failure story. Runner flaps, their shafts and their actuators live in a hot, oily, carbon-laden environment for a decade. When one sticks, or a position sensor drifts, the computer sees a commanded-versus-actual mismatch and sets a code. Symptoms owners report are the unglamorous ones: rough or hunting idle, a hesitation off the line, a check-engine light that comes back a week after the last "fix." Because the sensors and solenoid come installed on this manifold, replacing the manifold replaces those wear items in the same movement, which is a meaningful part of the value here.
The other reason these get replaced
Composite manifolds crack. Not usually catastrophically — more often a hairline at a boss, a warped sealing flange, or a broken vacuum fitting that someone snapped while working on something else entirely. The result is an unmetered air leak, which is a lean code, a lumpy idle and, in bad cases, a whistle you can hear at the fender. On this part the intake port gaskets are moulded into the manifold flanges, so there is no separate gasket set to source and no chance of installing one crooked.

Fitting notes
Budget more time than the labour guide says, because the fasteners are the hard part, not the manifold. Work cold, keep the bolts in order, and do not reef on plastic bosses with an impact. Clear the codes after the swap and let the engine relearn its idle before you decide whether the problem is gone.
