The Monitor Arm Was Invented in 1932, and It Was a Lamp

George Carwardine designed vehicle suspension systems for a living. In the early 1930s he was working on spring geometry when he stumbled onto something more interesting than a car: a linkage of springs and levers that could be moved with one finger and would then stay exactly where you left it, in any position, holding its own weight. He patented it, and because nobody wanted to buy a mysterious floating linkage, he attached a light bulb to the end and called it the Anglepoise.

Ninety years later, the exact same trick holds up a 34-inch ultrawide monitor.
