Custom-Fit Floor Liners: Husky X-act Contour 53388 vs SMARTLINER TPE, and How to Order the Right Set

Before there were laser scanners there were scissors. For about forty years the aftermarket floor mat was a universal rubber rectangle with a set of raised guide lines moulded into the underside, and the instructions said to trim along the line closest to your footwell. Everyone did it badly. You cut, you test-fit, you cut again, and you ended up with a mat that was one inch short at the firewall and one inch proud of the door sill, curling at the corner for the rest of the truck's life.

What killed the scissors was 3D laser scanning. Manufacturers now scan the actual floor pan of the actual trim level, so the liner arrives already shaped to the transmission hump, the seat rail bolts, the dead pedal and the factory retention posts. That is the entire difference between a "mat" and a "liner," and it is why fitment is now painfully specific.

Husky's spec: 3D laser scanned for a gap-free fit, a DuraGrip surface over the ProCore formula (softer underfoot than a hard tray, still grippy), a FormFit Edge that captures spills and mud rather than letting them run to the carpet, and hundreds of StayPut nibs plus factory retention post compatibility so the liner does not creep. Fitment is narrow, so read it twice: 2017–2026 Ford F-250, F-350 and F-450 Super Duty, Crew Cab only, with carpet flooring and the fold-flat factory storage box. It will not fit Regular Cab or SuperCab, and it will not fit vinyl-floor work trucks. Condition is open box — the retail carton has been opened and the liners are as packed by the manufacturer, but we have not unrolled or test-fitted them, so we cannot promise they are free of storage creasing. Rubber vs TPE, in one paragraph

Husky's ProCore is a rubber-family compound: heavier, softer underfoot, and it feels like a floor rather than a tray. Most of the newer custom sets — SMARTLINER, LASFIT, and the rest — use TPE, a recyclable plastic-rubber blend that is lighter, odourless out of the box, and hoses off in about ten seconds. If your complaint about aftermarket liners has ever been "it smelled like a tyre shop for a month," TPE is the answer. If your complaint is that they feel cheap underfoot, go rubber.

Three things to check before you click buy

Cab or row count, not just the year. Crew Cab, SuperCab and Regular Cab are three different mouldings. A 7-seat EV9 with captain's chairs and an 8-seat bench are three different second-row liners.

Flooring type. Carpet and vinyl floor pans are shaped differently and many liner sets are carpet-only, the 53388 included.

Retention posts. Factory posts are a safety feature, not a nuisance — a liner that does not lock to them can slide under the pedals. Every set above is designed around the vehicle's own retention system rather than a universal hook.
