The Laser Printer Was Invented By a Man Whose Boss Told Him to Stop

In 1969 a Xerox engineer named Gary Starkweather had an idea: point a laser at a xerographic drum and you could print anything a computer could describe, instead of only copying what was already on paper. Management at the Rochester research lab told him to drop it. He got himself transferred to the new Palo Alto Research Center instead and built it anyway. The machine that came out of that work, the Xerox 9700, shipped in 1977 and printed two pages a second — a rate that would still embarrass most office printers in your building today.

Color laser came much later and brought a business model with it. A color machine needs four cartridges instead of one, and manufacturers price the printer to move and the toner to earn. That is why a $300 color laser can quietly ask for $600 of OEM toner across its life — and why the compatible CMYK 4-pack is the single biggest lever a small office has on printing cost.

What you are actually buying in a CMYK 4-pack

Four cartridges: black, cyan, magenta and yellow. Two things separate a good set from a frustrating one.

• The chip. Modern color lasers refuse to print without a recognized chip reporting toner level. A set sold "with chip" installs and prints. A set without one expects you to transfer chips off your old cartridges, which is fine if you kept them and miserable if you did not.
• Standard vs high yield. The X, H or XL suffix in a part number means high yield — more toner in the same shell for a modest price increase. High yield is almost always the better cost per page.

Yields are rated at 5% page coverage on Letter or A4. That is a light business document. If you print charts, photos or full-bleed marketing pages, cut the rated number roughly in half and plan accordingly. Cost per page, not sticker price, is the only number that matters: divide the price of the set by the summed rated yields and you can compare any two options honestly.

OEM, compatible, or remanufactured?

OEM is the printer maker's own cartridge — the most predictable color and the highest price. Worth it when color accuracy is the product, as in a print shop or a design studio. Compatible cartridges are newly built aftermarket units; the good ones are excellent and the price gap is enormous. Remanufactured means an original shell cleaned, refilled and re-chipped. For internal documents, invoices, packing slips and school handouts, compatible toner is the obvious answer and has been for years.

When only one color runs out

Two habits that stretch a set

Print internal documents in grayscale by default and set the driver to draft or toner-save for anything nobody outside the building will read — between them these can meaningfully extend a set with no visible downside on ordinary text. And when a color starts fading, take the cartridge out and rock it gently side to side before you replace it; there is usually a surprising amount of toner left clinging to the walls, often good for a few dozen more pages while your replacement ships.
