A typewriter's "consumable" was a cloth ribbon that cost a couple of dollars and lasted for months, and nobody at the typewriter company got rich off it. Then the printer industry discovered a better business: sell the machine cheap and charge like a jeweler for the ink. It is the classic razor-and-blades playbook, and it works beautifully — right up until you discover the liquidation market, where sealed compatible cartridges show up at prices your printer's manufacturer would rather you never see. The cost-per-page math

Toner value comes down to one number: price divided by rated page yield (at the industry-standard 5% coverage). Here is what our current shelf works out to:

• MEGOFFICE 4-pack Canon 121 / CRG-121 black toner — $29.49 on sale (was $58.99). Up to 5,000 pages per cartridge means roughly 20,000 pages: about 0.15 cents per page for Canon imageCLASS D1620/D1650.
• 507X / CE400X high-yield black 2-pack for HP M551/M570/M575 — $52.99. Up to 11,000 pages each is about 22,000 pages, around 0.24 cents per page.
• v4ink 4-pack Canon 119 / CRG-119 toner — $24.99 on sale (was $49.99). About 2,700 pages per cartridge, so roughly 10,800 pages at about 0.23 cents per page for imageCLASS MF414dw/MF416dw and LBP251dw-family printers.
