Bad Wheel Bearing Symptoms - and the Exact Hub Assembly Part Numbers (513301 Audi, 513293 Odyssey, 512454 Camry)
In 1898 a St. Louis carriage builder named Henry Timken patented a bearing whose rollers were slightly conical, set at an angle, so that a single row could carry a load pushing down on the axle and a load shoving it sideways at the same time. Ball bearings existed already; what they did badly was the sideways part. A carriage wheel going around a corner is being pushed in both directions at once, and Timken's tapered roller took both. He founded a company on it the following year, and every car you have ever driven has some descendant of that patent between the wheel and the car.

What changed is the packaging. Your grandfather's front wheels rode on two loose tapered bearings he repacked with grease every spring and adjusted by feel. Modern cars use a sealed hub assembly: bearing, races, hub flange, wheel studs, seals and usually the ABS encoder ring, all pressed together at the factory and never opened again. It lasts far longer with zero maintenance, and when it finally goes you replace the whole unit rather than adjusting anything.
The four symptoms, in the order they show up
- A hum or drone that rises with road speed, not engine speed. Take it out of gear and coast — if the noise tracks how fast the wheels are turning and ignores what the engine is doing, it is rotational: a bearing or a tire.
- The noise changes when you steer. This is the one that separates a bearing from a cupped tire. On an empty road, gently weave left and right. Swerving right loads the left side of the car; if the drone gets louder loading one side and quieter loading the other, the noisy bearing is on the side that gets louder under load.
- The ABS light comes on, often intermittently at first. Most modern hubs carry the tone ring or magnetic encoder for the wheel-speed sensor. As the bearing develops play, the sensor gap wanders and the module starts seeing nonsense — which is why a wheel-speed-sensor code so often turns out to be a bearing.
- Play at the wheel. Jack the corner up, grip the tire at 12 and 6 o'clock and rock it. Movement there is a bearing (grip at 9 and 3 instead and you are testing tie rods). Then spin the wheel by hand and listen for gravel.
Do not let this one ride indefinitely. A bearing that has been growling for months can seize or, in the worst case, let the hub separate. A bearing that has been growling for a week is a Saturday job.
512, 513: the numbers are not random
The aftermarket numbers everyone quotes come from a shared cataloguing scheme, and the useful shortcut is that 513-series numbers are front hub assemblies and 512-series are rears. It is the fastest way to sanity-check a listing against your own diagnosis: if you are certain the noise is at the back and the part number starts with 513, something is wrong with the search, not with your ears. Three things that go wrong during the job
The axle nut is usually single-use. Staked or crimped nuts are designed to deform once. Reusing one is how a perfectly good new bearing comes loose six months later. Torque matters more than you think — these are often 150 to 250 lb-ft depending on the vehicle, and both under- and over-torquing preloads the bearing wrongly and shortens its life. Look up your figure; do not guess with a breaker bar. And never let the car sit on the wheel with the axle nut loose, because the weight of the vehicle through an unclamped bearing damages it immediately.
The last question is always whether to do both sides. Bearings are not brake pads — there is no safety reason to replace them in pairs, and one side genuinely does fail first. But if the car has serious mileage, the labour is nearly identical for the second side and you are already in there, which is why several of these listings come as pairs in the first place.
